LizardsKnow — A Journey Through Flow, Fellowship, Myth, and the Almighty

LizardsKnow.com is all about the journey…which is apt when considering how and where it started from. The story of how a rabid anti-Phish zealot becomes a Phan is a separate rabbit hole and you can certainly read that story on this site as well.

But the purpose of LizardsKnow is deeper than just where and how it started, it’s about the exploration of one man’s journey down a rabbit hole of Phish’s creation. I do not claim to be a Phish Seer, or some kind of insider with a view into Trey’s mind. No, but I do believe in finding light where it shines and enjoying the glow while it’s there to be gleaned.

There are moments in life when creation doesn’t feel mechanical or forced … it feels musical. It feels like a song being sung into existence.

Aslan sings Narnia into being. The Ainur shape Middle‑earth through harmony. Elven cities glow with ancient beauty. Hobbit villages hum with quiet holiness. And somewhere in the middle of all that mythic wonder, Phish steps onto a stage and creates a world of their own not with blueprints, but with flow, fellowship, and the jam.

Creation, in all these stories, is a sheer act of will … a spark from nothing, a thought that becomes form, a melody that becomes meaning, a movement that becomes world. And I’ve come to believe that God speaks through all of it. Not just through church, not just through scripture, but through whatever reaches us … music, myth, community, chaos, silence, story.

I’ve always had a healthy disrespect for organized religion. But I’ve never lacked belief in the Almighty.

I didn’t always like Him. I didn’t always think He was on my side. But I wasn’t then who I am now … and even now, I wonder who I’ll be in 5, 10, 15 years.

There is a path for all who would travel. Being lost doesn’t mean you don’t know where you’re going … it means you’re enjoying the ride more than worrying about the destination.

My exploration of Phish culture is a window into my journey. It’s not about converting anyone. It’s not about claiming Phish is Christian. It’s about recognizing the same divine patterns that show up everywhere.

Because more and more, I’m finding that christian (little ‘C’ on purpose) and Christ‑like are no longer the same thing … if they ever were. Christian has become a label. Christ‑like is a way of being.

One builds pulpits. One washes feet. One condemns. One restores. One seeks power. One seeks harmony.

Jesus taught that we are all sinners, all broken, all in need of grace and that none of us can reach God alone. But He also taught that love, fellowship, humility, and sacrifice are the true markers of the divine. Not domination. Not hierarchy. Not fear.

The wolves in sheep’s clothing aka the Wilsons of the world use truth to control. The Lizards the meek, the humble, the spiritually awake use truth to liberate.

When Trey sings that the Lizards “didn’t do what smart people did,” he’s not calling them dumb. He’s saying the Lizards didn’t weaponize the Helping Friendly Book. They didn’t turn wisdom into domination. They didn’t become Wilson. They chose community, harmony, humility, and shared life.

They acted from instinctive goodness, the same instinct you see when someone sacrifices themselves without a second thought. Not for glory. Not for reward. But because it’s simply who they are.

That’s divine imprinting. That’s the Logos, the Song Behind All Songs, shining through human flesh. That’s the light that shines in the darkness.

And Phish … whether they intend it or not … creates a space where that same spiritual pattern emerges.

Not in the songs themselves, but in the jams. Not in the setlist, but in the flow. Not in the performance, but in the fellowship.

There’s a moment in every great Phish show where the band gets lost in the music, the crowd dissolves into the sound, and the sum becomes greater than the whole of its parts. Trey tells a story with the setlist, but the journey is shared … between the players and the played, between the creators and the creation, between the band and the crowd.

That’s harmony. That’s unity without uniformity. That’s individuality without isolation. That’s community without coercion. That’s the kind of fellowship Jesus died for. That’s the kind of flow the Helping Friendly Book teaches. That’s the kind of moral arc Lewis and Tolkien wrote into their worlds. That’s the kind of truth God speaks through … if we’re willing to hear it.

So LizardsKnow.com is my attempt to gather all of this … Phish, Gamehendge, Tolkien, Lewis, Jesus, myth, music, flow, fellowship, sin, salvation, peace, tranquility and offer it as a guide, a companion, an addendum to the Helping Friendly Book.

Not commandments. Not doctrine. Not rules.

Just shall we say…Pete Notes are reflections on life, love, health, spiritualness, harmony, community, sin, salvation, and the quiet holiness of being human in a world gone mad.

LizardsKnow is about all of it and none of it. It’s about what it means to me and more importantly, what you can take from it for yourselves. It’s about all the truth that hides in plain sight that some choose not to look at, or listen to. It just is what it is, and it will become whatever it was meant to be. So, with that….

Welcome.

Pull up a chair.

Stay as long as you like. Set your soul free.

The flow is open. The journey is shared. The Book is still being written.
