What is Logos?

I am a Christ-follower. I learned that term many years ago, from a pastor who disliked the term Christian, because he felt then that it was overused and not correctly applied to people who sadly professed a belief in Jesus Christ, but didn’t seem to care for what it meant to be a follower of Christ.

There are many places in the world that speak truth with authority, whether that is in a C.S. Lewis story, or a song written by a band who started as nothing more than a group of friends who liked the idea of jamming together at small clubs near their university. The one thing TRUTH does, is it REACHES people. It finds them, wherever they are and it speaks to their souls. And once they hear it, well, things change. In all of that, Logos is behind it all. The Song Behind All Songs

In the gospel of John, the opening line is as simple as it is cosmic:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was WITH God, and the Word WAS God…(John 1:1-2)

But “Word” is a translation of a much bigger idea. The Greek term is referred to as Logos.

Logos means:

  • the pattern behind reality
  • the meaning woven into creation
  • the harmony that holds everything together
  • the divine logic of love
  • the song that existed before anything else
  • the voice that speaks life into being

It’s not just speech. It’s not just language. It’s not just thought.

It’s the creative force of God. The melody that becomes mountains. The rhythm that becomes rivers. The breath that becomes humanity.

Logos is the music of creation. The Song Behind ALL Songs!

How Logos connects to my worldview

Logos circles around us in all the world without being explicitly named:

  • Aslan singing Narnia into existence
  • The Ainur shaping Middle Earth through harmony
  • Phish creating worlds through improvisation
  • The jam becoming a living organism
  • The Helping Friendly Book teaching liberation for the Lizards
  • The Lizards choosing harmony over domination
  • The divine speaking through unexpected channels

All of that is Logos.

It’s the same pattern appearing in different mythic languages.

Lewis knew it. Tolkien knew it. Trey knows it in his bones. We all have lived it, some perhaps without realizing it, but realizing it is one thing, writing/talking/sharing about it, that’s what Lizards do.

Logos is the thread that ties your entire site together.

Logos is Christ-like, not Christian

This is where words matter and so a set of definitions between Christ-LIKE and Christian

In the world today, many claiming to BE Christian seem to have NO IDEA what living a Christ-like life looks like. Logos is the reason why.

Christian has become a label. Christ-like is a way of being.

Logos is the Christ-like part:

  • harmony
  • humility
  • sacrifice
  • fellowship
  • flow
  • truth
  • light
  • creation
  • love

Logos is not a pulpit. Logos is not a hierarchy. Logos is not a weapon.

Logos is the divine pattern that shows up in:

  • myth
  • music
  • story
  • community
  • sacrifice
  • the jam
  • the flow
  • the human heart

It’s the thing you’ve been seeing your whole life… even when you didn’t have the word for it.

Logos and Gamehendge

Gamehendge is a Logos story.

Icculus gives the Book. The Book contains truth. Truth is meant to liberate. Wilson steals it. Power corrupts. The Lizards remain humble. The meek understand the Book. The tyrant falls. Harmony is restored.

This is the same moral arc as John 1. The same moral arc as Narnia. The same moral arc as Middle Earth. The same moral arc as Jesus.

Different myth. Same Logos.

⭐ Logos and Phish

Phish is not religious. I do not claim to know if any of the band members are believers in God, or the Spaghetti Monster and I do not ever want to be the kind of person who claims otherwise. The point of religion is rarely to draw nearer to God, which is why Logos is SO IMPORTANT to discern it where you find it. For Phish, the story is the script where Logos can grow from, BUT the jam is Logos in motion.

The band listens. The band surrenders. The band sacrifices ego. The band serves the moment. The band creates something bigger than themselves.

The crowd joins. The crowd dissolves into the sound. The crowd becomes part of the creation.

The players and the played become one.

That is Logos. That is incarnation. That is the Word becoming flesh in a musical sense. That is the Light shining in the darkness. That is the divine pattern appearing in a jam band.

This is not forcing theology onto Phish by any stretch of the imagination. Lizards simply recognize the same spiritual pattern.

Logos and You

Your entire journey is a Logos journey. Being a lizard, whether you realize it or not IS that journey. For what it’s worth, congrats, because man, this life is WAY TOO SHORT to waste it yelling at someone in traffic, or worrying about a promotion, or being too scared to just go talk to someone and become friends.

We find God in places that aren’t “Christian” and that’s because God is EVERYTHING and EVERYWHERE. Lizards have heard truth in music that wasn’t “religious”. A lizard can see moral arcs in fantasy worlds or feel the divine in improvisation. Recognized fellowship as holy…Or understanding that sacrifice is a divine instinct.

You understood that being lost is part of the path. You realized God speaks through whatever reaches us.

That is Logos.

It’s been calling to you your whole life.
